Gluten free:beyond the illness

Celiac disease is something I would say is a struggle but has absolutely benefitted my way of life as well, although it has created so many lows in my life (or even my day to day) but actually now it is part of who I am. Although I do hate having to ask the waiter for a gluten free menu still.

It has completely thrown me out of comfort zone, it has encouraged me to try so many more foods and look into exactly what I’m putting into my body, throughout my diagnosis I have learnt many things and I’m actually excited that I now get to share my thoughts with you. Not only that, please if you have your own tips or suggestions I would love to hear them.

I soon realised all the foods I would be giving up and instantly tried to look for replacements also trying as many brands as I could to find the best ones. I found a lot of the textures to gluten free food to be the worst. Biscuits that crumbled in your mouth like grit, bread that was like sand, I spat so much food out in the first year it was disgusting. But I soon realised I was trying to replace junk food and was so desperate to get a good relationship back with food I wasn’t looking at exactly what I was eating, I realised supermarket “free from” are packed with sugar/sweeteners almost like they trying to cover a bad taste.

Everyone tried to recommend that I make my own treats using alternatives, but I have very little patients when I’m hungry. I found that I preferred finding foods that are already naturally Gluten Free, and decided it was defiantly healthier, I soon realised I enjoyed foods I didn’t know I could such as fish, avocados, natural yogurts, sushi & even making my own smoothies. I have found a few gluten free products I like, like Genius farmhouse seeded bread, co-op do their own gluten free version of a Bueno bar it’s the only free from chocolate bar I love! I tend to eat Tesco’s gluten free pasta going to sound crazy but the shell shape is so much better for texture, Natures path do a gluten free berry granola that I eat goes so well with Greek yogurt because it’s so flavourful I also add a few raspberries, blueberries & strawberries and you can get that from Tesco as well.

Safe to say 3 years on and I’m still finding stuff that I like, but I can finally say I get excited to try new things and am defiantly way more adventurous. I am adamant I will have a good relationship again with food!
